Vinted is an online fashion marketplace that allows its users to sell, buy, and swap second-hand clothing items and accessories. Vinted is active in 12 countries across Europe and has 20 million members. At the end of 2019 Vinted reached the unicorn status (i.e. a start-up company valued at over $1 billion).
Vinted is growing fast and so is the Data Science team. BLOOM supported in making the Data Science Team ready for further growth. The first challenge was growing from 15 to 30 Data Scientists in 6 months. By fulfilling the role of interim Director of Data Science, we set up reporting lines, clear role descriptions and formalised the performance reviews. A middle management layer of Team Leads was created and the novice Team Leads received regular BLOOM coaching. We identified knowledge gaps of the Data Science team and provided trainings to improve the impact of the team.
One of the next big challenges of Vinted is the transition to a long-term Machine Learning organisation. Creating the opportunity for Data Scientists to build and productionise ML applications, like recommendation engines and prediction models, fast and with little help from Engineering. BLOOM helped kick-starting the ML platform creation, from internal alignment, defining the high-lever architecture, to developing the platform itself with the brand-new ML Engineering Team.
BLOOM help was a game changer for our Data Science team during this intense scale-up phase of Vinted. They have helped us both to satisfy rapidly increasing demand for analytical resources and to improve its quality in a very short period of time.
